Advanced Regen Medical Technologies is a clinical stage biotechnology company founded in 2012 with a focus on developing cellular therapeutics to treat age-related diseases. Advanced Regen’s lead technology is an anti-aging strategy to help patients live well longer by rejuvenating the function of the aging immune system.
The rejuvenation of aged tissue is not a new concept. It has been demonstrated for decades through parabiosis. By sewing a young animal to an older animal, such as a young mouse to an old mouse, the two animals develop a common blood supply. In a short period of time, the old mouse begins to take on features of the young mouse with the immune and stem cell repair systems becoming more active with no evidence of adverse effects.
At Advanced Regen, we're focusing on extending this science and restoring the aging immune system. To do this, we take young human cells and co-culture them with an older patient’s cells. During co-culturing, the cells are kept separate by a membrane but share the same media. In this way, the older cells are exposed to the ‘secretome’ and tiny communication vesicles, called exosomes, that are produced by the nearby young cells. This treatment rejuvenates the function and activity level of the aged cells. Furthermore, it has been observed that the effects are not limited only to the cells in the original culture but are propagated to other cells once redelivered into the body.
What researchers at Advanced Regen have learned is that the young cell exosomes deliver microRNAs (miRNAs) that alter recipient aged cells’ gene expression. A handful of these miRNAs have been identified as the active therapeutic agents behind the restorative capability. The first patient group to undergo Advanced Regen’s anti-aging treatment at the Okyanos Center for Regenerative Medicine in Freeport, Bahamas have demonstrated the treatment to be safe, with early results indicating improved immune function. A second set of patients will be treated in 2019.
Advanced Regen is also investigating next generation anti-aging therapeutics. Using Tissue Genesis-derived stromal vascular fraction, research is underway to develop the ability to extract a patient’s adipose tissue, rejuvenate the adipose tissue derived cells, then deliver them back to the patient; ultimately restoring our endogenous tissue repair systems to a more youthful and robust state.
